Drawing, thinking, learning, and progress

Learning the structure of the head helped me better see the planes of the head. This in turn may have helped my rendering. Any who here's a pic and the referencing pic. I'm going to tweak the values, making them more contrasting.

Landscape sketches

I try to spend 30 or so mins on each painting before I move on to the next.

Landscape sketches

I've loosely attempted landscapes in the past. I think I'll take a small break from the portraits and hit the scenery pretty hard.

Sketchbook dump!

And another!

New portrait, new approach.

I started a sketchbook on conceptart.org and received a few comments and recommendations. One of the recommendations was working on my construction. I knew this to be true for a few months now and decided to work on it.

Courtesy of Deviantart.com I picked a new portrait to recreate. Using Loomis as a foundation I tried mostly to break down the image into basic forms. Once the forms were seen I started rendering.

I used red lines to illustrate the form and the goal I was trying to accomplish.

Pyramid Head

Took a break from the portraits, did Pyramid Head. I should do more of my favorite horror characters.

#004!

I felt a crutch of mine was the soft brush. So, I've been trying to avoid it and focus on my strokes.

Setting new goals and still doodling onward

I've been attempting to clean up my digital painting for a year or so now and its still a struggle. At first it was adjusting to the tablet itself and creating smooth lines, now it's moved on to smooth and clean rendering. So what do I do? Digital paint more obviously, but I had to set some goals.

I've learned through rigorous practice you can improve. It shows clearly in my older work. So with that knowledge I set myself up with a goal of 100 portraits. By the 100th one it can't be that bad right? One way to find out!

I also gave myself a few guidelines. No more than an hour on each piece, unless I felt like it was going somewhere interesting. Mix colored portraits and grey scale. And most importantly really look at my work and decide what I like and what needs work and try to recall that information for every new piece.

And so it begins.

The first was my warm up and the second was my hour+ piece. I used photo references from the internet. :D

Pushing into 4 values

In the first 2 photo referenced  images i was eyeballing the shape and trying to recreate it. On the last one I tried to 4 for distinct values. In doing so I was able to make it look cleaner and maybe even a little more accurate to the photo. :D
